Interview with Samarjith Baskaran | Doorpin

I hope this can inspire you to become a successful entrepreneur too! Why is it important to hear the story of a successful entrepreneur?

Having the vision to become an entrepreneur is great. Making it happen is another story!

In that frame, I had the pleasure to interview Samarjith Baskaran, founder of Doorpin. Doorpin aims to solve the problem of physical storage of the records by providing the most secure storage available on the cloud, to which one can simply upload the said files or reports. Doorpin has also simplified the entire laborious process and replaced it with simple UI/UX so much, that it’s as simple as taking a photo of the report and then uploading it to the cloud, all at the touch of a button, on your phone!

One can access the files at their convenience, one can view them, edit them, copy them, mail them, anything that one wants to do!

The records will also be available to patients, so they don’t have to walk around with heavy files laden with their medical history and reports, every time they have to consult a doctor. No hassles of losing files and records because they’re safe and secure in Doorpin’s cloud storage and will be made available to them at the click of a button, quite literally!

1. What gets you out of bed in the morning i.e what’s your source of motivation?
Motivation isn’t just a word it’s like a knife pointed towards me especially when there are people looking up to me and I would never want to fail them. My biggest motivation is my wife, who believes that I will be a successful entrepreneur, keeps supporting me, and motivates me.

2. Why should people choose your product/services?
My product has some unique features that no other service provider has, we ensure people safety, we customize for B2B customers as we are well known for it, the future of the app that’s ongoing has a variety of features that’s under the patent that works on, the team in is in growing state and soon we expect the company to go global.

3. What’s your competitive advantage and why can’t it be copied?
The advantage is we have improvised certain features and added a few features that have not been in the sector yet, especially our launch in India. Our app will turn out to be the most advanced in the health sector, which will take a few years to adopt the technology and it shall give a competitive edge. We don’t have mundane features that makes using the product slowly, we have security and other features that will make our consumers feel safe and trust us.

4. What risks are you facing?
Risks? There are umpteen risks; financial risks, data security, privacy, and reputation. The risk is more personal, there are people waiting to see me fail and the kind of criticism I face isn’t something to be happy about. It’s worse when these are from the people around you and let you walk with a big smile thinking everything is temporary and without taking any risk you would never know how beautiful the world looks.

5. Have you considered any alliance/partnership?
I have not thought of it yet, as I have not found the right person who can understand my vision and if I find someone like that I may consider.

6. What are your cash flow projections? When will you break even? How much will you need in investments?
Our cash flow projections are now to at 100,000 INR as it’s just been a month our app has been launched, expected to break even by the end of September, we have a target investment requirement of 4-5 crores. A company has come forward to make a 125,000 US$ investment and its expected pretty soon; then the company will have much better improvements.

7. What comes first for you money or emotions?
For me, emotions come first as I am someone who believes a person who thinks money first is always a person with low morale and there has been no money made without any emotion.

8. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
My strengths are always being honest and straightforward, my family, being creative so coming up with something new is always in me and of course my positive attitude.

My Weakness is I am a perfectionist, short-tempered, and have the fear of letting people down.

9. Tell me about an accomplishment you are most proud of.
An accomplishment I’m most proud of is becoming the founder of doorpin as I believe it will help many people and save many lives. It will also keep the health sector connected on a global platform.

10. How do you handle the pressure?
Pressure builds, sometimes it’s so hectic that I often just take a break and divert myself especially playing with my dogs, talking to my friends, and working out. The best hobby is glass painting, which helps me calm down and that is how I handle my pressure.

11. If you sold your company today, what would be the tone of the conversation? What would you want to gain? What would you want to avoid losing?
My tone of the conversation will depend on the cost of the company, it wouldn’t be so easy and at the same time, I will be glad if there is someone who can handle the company in a better way. I also believe being a leader is always making way for better things, I believe in that and I shall let it be that way. I would want the company that buys it to avoid losing the initial employees who joined the company during its struggle and also be as secure as I would have them.

12. What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Don’t take people’s advice for granted but don’t depend completely on them for your success, until you make a move everything will be just words that fly in the air.
